Roald Dahl was famous for his characters – you will research some of his well-known characters and explore how Roald Dahl made them interesting?
Activity 1:
Roald Dahl describes his characters with a lot of detail and imagination.
Watch the videos & make notes about each of the characters.

AUGUSTUS
MIKE TEAVEE
VERUCA
VIOLET
CHARLIE

Notes:
Augustus: Is a german character in the movie and is also very addicted to junk, as of chocolate shown in the movie. He can be naughty and may not listen to what people try to give advice about.

Mike Teavee: Mike is a very mean, rude, selfish character that cares only about his video games, and his tv. He doesn't care about other people's feelings and gets nosy to other people's business, but if he gets disturbed it's tough.

Veruca: Veruca is shown as spoilt, a character who gets whatever she wants, doesn't care about anything other than what she gets, and loves squirrels!

Violet: Violet is not like other girls, she loves gum and is always trying to be like her mother, she takes karate classes and wins every competition she's been in, all the characters don't seem to see what other people think about them, except Charlie.

Charlie: Charlie is a very sweet boy, he shows kindness and will care for anyone in need, he shows a lot of expressions when performing as well, he's thoughtful even though he may come from a poor background, as well plays the main character of the children.

Activity 2-
Choose one character to play.
Violet

Four steps in transformation into a character:
1. Exploring - search out every angle of the character with the physical aspects.  E.g how does the character sit on a chair, stand, walk, etc.. observe their body language, gestures, stance.
2. Feeling - search out all feelings of the character.
3. Trying - rehearse and attempt to be the character.
4. Doing - actually perform the character in front of an audience.
Activity 3- Deadline June 25th
Record a short scene of you in Role as the character.
You can choose a situation - this can be from the story or not (e.g ordering food from Mc Donalds)
You can work with a partner or by yourself. If you work with a partner, you must arrange your zoom meetings to practices and record your evidence.
(No Partner)
Reflection: What was it like to act as one of the Characters? What character was your favorite? Why is characterization important?

It was fun to act like Violet, it showed a lot of expressions, and how she included gum to her daily life, as the character itself has a lot of attitude, and to act like them can make you a character, where you can reveal your inner expressions.

My favorite character has to be Violet, as I did play her role. She is very selfish but also confident, she's brave when she knows who she is with, that's what I like about her.

How important characterization is in my opinion, is how you are portraying the character,  portraying a character is all about what he/she does, and to include that in a performance is hard, but that's what gives it more expression.
